What is evaporative dry eye?
Evaporative dry eye is the most common form of dry eye disease. The tear film evaporates too quickly — usually because the oily (lipid) layer produced by the eyelid glands is insufficient or unstable. This leaves the eye surface exposed, causing dryness, grittiness, burning and fluctuating vision.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
The meibomian glands along your eyelid margins secrete the lipids that keep tears from evaporating. When they become blocked or inflamed (MGD), the lipid layer thins and tears evaporate faster. MGD is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye.

Digital screen effects
Looking at screens reduces your blink rate and increases incomplete blinks. Fewer full blinks means the lipid layer isn't spread evenly, accelerating evaporation. This is why dry eye symptoms often worsen during long screen sessions.

Treatment options
Common approaches include warm compresses and lid hygiene (to unblock glands), lipid-based artificial tears, omega-3 intake, and managing your environment (humidity, airflow). Persistent cases may need in-office procedures — a practitioner can advise.

Prevention tips
Practise the 20-20-20 rule, blink fully and often during screen use, stay hydrated, avoid direct airflow to the eyes (fans, air-con, car vents), and take regular screen breaks. Early action keeps symptoms mild.
